metro news 2PPC meets a man who's built an alternative hot hatch - and discovers it's hotter than July. Hot and Hatch go together like V and W. Or Peugeot, Citroën, Renault - in fact just about anyone these days. But a Metro? Darren Booker reckoned he could build something to rival the best of the rest and we thinks he's managed it.

Not only does his K-series-powered, turbocharged Metro leave most other hatches standing, it drives like a production car, with brakes, handling and ride quality to match.

Practical Performance Car £999 ChallengePPC's £999 challenge draws in all kinds of people and cars, from the outright wacky to some very tasty cars, This "£999 Focus" is all about Nick aka"TeamTotalWankel".

"This'll be my 3rd year doing the £999 challenge. The 1st year was in a very rusty RX7 TurboII that managed 0-60 in 5.5secs and a 14.0 1/4 mile, and came 4th overall. Last year was an E34 535is which was only bought for a 'Ring trip, but decided to pump a 100bhp shot of NOS through it and managed 6th.

This years car is a joint effort with my mate Gaz, who wanted to get involved

The PPC Team will be at the Retro Show on Sunday, with Charlie & his 27 litre Rover.  We'll also be taking a keg of beer, so Will & Kev should be quite chatty. Subscribers are all eligible for a free pint - so come and say 'hi' and claim yours. If you don't subscribe - come along anyway and see the cars (the Van will be there too, if Will doesn't crash it on the way to the Santa Pod Raceway) and whilst you're there, you can sign for a great sub offer.

It'll be a good show. We'll definitely be there.  That is unless it's raining and then, well, we probably won't be there.

Practical Performance Car (PPC) is a monthly magazine aimed at real car enthusiasts interested in affordable performance tuning. At PPC we pride ourselves in providing the most entertaining, informative and inspiring features for petrolheads everywhere. Each month we feature an eclectic mix of affordable performance cars, great driving adventures and world-class technical features for the DiY tuner. Our editorial team is headed up by well known Will Holman who has a deserved reputation for 'stick a V8 under the bonnet' attitude to life. His editorial team is stacked with experience including Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly missed Cars and Car Conversions (CCC) magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper - ex technical editor of Practical Classics.

Have a look at the online Staff Cars section to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing go to your local newsagent, WHSmiths, Asda, Tesco or Sainsburys - PPC is on sale the last Thursday of every month. Better still visit our subscriptions page for the latest offers and discounts to have PPC delivered direct to your door at a fraction of the cost.
